Buddhism is a way of life enriched with all tools we need for both our material and spiritual growth. In 2015, Uganda Buddhist Centre saw the need to further introduce Buddhism within the lives of people in the communities neighboring the Centre. The Centre, with the leadership of Ven. Buddharakkhita has overseen the formation of Bulega Buddhist Community, whose goals are to support and ensure the continuing development of the villagen where the Centre is located. These goals are to be achieved hand-in-hand with encouragement of the community to grow its own food and to achieve economic independence. Toward the second goal, Bhante donated a sewing machine for purposes of income generation.
The Community also came up with several ideas, projects and activities aimed at establishing a foundation for inner spiritual growth and improved general welfare through the Dhamma. These include organizing Dhamma programs, performing tasks aimed at improving village sanitation, and the clearing and maintenance of small side roads, members’ houses, and the main temple. In September 2015, Bulega Buddhist Community organized a “Walk for the Hungry” activity that was aimed at raising awareness about people in the surrounding community who are in need of the most basic sustenance. Furthermore, the Community organized its members to and agreed to have a monthly general cleaning of the Uganda Buddhist Centre premises. Regular meetings are conducted to discuss important matters. In a meeting with Ven. Buddharakkhita, members of Bulega Buddhist Community asked him for opportunities to learn English language and have regular Dhamma discussions.
